A specific purpose of the Spanish Space Agency is to contribute to National Security.
The Security and Planning Division helps to achieve the objectives set out in the National Security Strategy, the National Aerospace Security Strategy, the European Union's Space Strategy for Security and Defence, and NATO's Space Policy.
It is also responsible for the following:
- Coordinating the contribution of the different divisions to the development of the National Spatial Strategy and the annual Action Plan.
- Supporting tasks relating to the certification of space infrastructures and the safe operation of Space Traffic and monitoring of activities related to Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) and Space Situational Awareness (SSA).
- Ensuring cybersecurity, data protection, accreditation of companies, premises and individuals involved in classified projects, and protection against threats and risks. It also ensures the environmental sustainability of space operations.
- Establishing the liability requirements associated with space operations, in particular, insurance coverage and supervision of space operations.
The Security and Planning Division will also be directly involved in any space programmes or dual-use or defence activities promoted or led by the Spanish Space Agency through its other divisions.
